Irish Chain Baby Quilt

Debra over at Debra's Design Studio is doing some amazing charity work this year with her quilts. To do my part, I pledged a baby quilt top for a teen mother.

So I know they aren't baby colors, but it's what I had in my stash and well... I'd like it :-)

In the process of making this quilt I discovered for myself one very important quilting truth: no fabric is ugly if you cut it small enough. I had a bright red and yellow eyesore print that turned out to be a fantastic addition.

I also rediscovered my apparent inability to cut the correct amount of fabric and had a bunch of 1 1/2" strips leftover.

So I made a border for the quilt, which I think makes the quilt feel more finished.

And then I made some 9-patch and 4-patch squares that I will tuck away for future projects.

My scrap blocks will wait in this adorable chest that came with a Numi tea gift (Thank you Lisa!).

I'm continually organizing my crafting area and unique boxes like this are such a treat. The box is a little wobbly, but will hold fabric well.

this quilt is so cute and for charity - karma. i agree that even ugly fabric can be used. i think it's so true. I want to save my little fabric scraps now for future projects.

Hehe, that box is pretty cool. Also, I didn't know that's where the border came from! At least the scraps didn't go to waste or to a different project.

I really like the border. It has an improvisational look, but also fits in perfectly...just like the scrap quilts of old.

My favorite baby quilts are always the ones that aren't "baby colors"...

This one turned out beautifully!
