Patchwork sock fabric is my ultimate goal for cute socks. When you are repurposing used items, it's always a good idea to try to turn it into a raw material, like fabric or thread, that can be used for any project.
Sewing the sock squares together did pose some difficulty. Socks are stretchy! I used a zig zag and set the stitch length to medium-long.

Because I have them, I chose to cut my socks apart with my rotary blade and ruler, but scissors work just as well.

I want all of the cute parts possible, but none of the weird curved fabric. I cut off the heel, the toe, and the cuff.

Then just cut it open to make a nice rectangle.

This is the return on one sock.

So I started with a bag of socks (that I've been saving up for like two years) and I ended up with a pile of sock bits and some sock fabric.
Sock bits can be incorporated into weaving or crocheting, made into
cute sock jewels, used for embellishment, etc. I imagine that little sock pieces could make sweet little petals for cloth flowers. I'll definitely find something fun to use these for.

Sock bits can also be used for pillow stuffing.
Your sock fabric is very interesting! A nice piece of fleece would be perfect for the backing--it would give some stability and warmth to the sock fabric (if you are wanting to make a quilt); otherwise, maybe some T-shirt fabric (harvested from T-shirts, of course!) so the piece would continue to mold and shape.
What are your plans for the sock fabric? It could be cool to use it in stuffed sculptures.
how do you go through so many socks?!?! that whole pile is just two years? I only go through about one package a year, tops. (but then again all my socks are pretty boring)
Does this have something to do with the cuteness level of the socks - the cuter they are, the shorter the lifespan?
I'll be posting the finished projects made from socks later on this month, so be sure to tune in again!
Well to be honest I have no idea how long it really took me to accumulate all of those socks. I do think several of them were lower quality, but I also think I had bunch of really old socks when I started pulling them out of my sock rotation two years ago.
very creative. socks really are hard to throw away after faithful service to the feet. this is a nice alternative. must be lots of other uses as well, now that I think about it. I enjoy your eco-angle and your links are very good, too.
