Alliance for American Quilts, Crazy for Quilts Contest

The Alliance for American Quilts is having a crazy quilt contest. I'm not really a crazy quilter, but submissions are 16" X 16" so I figured it was worth a shot.

For all those interested, you can find more information here.

Crazy quilting began in the Victorian era as a way to showcase a woman's embroidery skills. So naturally, crazy quilts are characterized by heavy embroidery, but also irregular piecing.

Like I said, I'm not a crazy quilter. I did attempt irregular piecing first, but gave up and made this half square triangle kaleidoscope. Most of these fabrics were generously given to me by Debra. Thanks Debra!

My intention for the piece is to have the black triangles be "holes" in the picture that branches, flowers, and other pretty things are coming out of. Here is my first branch. My seam treatments are all nondescript gray to help emphasize the pretty stuff.

I embroidered all of my seams first, and when it came time to make my tree branch I just worked over my previous stitches. It worked amazingly well. Tune in next week to see more embroidered tree branches :-)

Great! I am glad you could use the scraps!

Very cool concept!! I'll be checking back to see your piece develop.

That's a lot of embroidery you've done!
I, too, will really enjoy watching this unfold.

Esther, i'm so impressed with your incredibly straight piecing and love the way your working in organic shapes over the geometric pieces. I'm a novice quilter and draw a lot of inspiration from seeing the contest quilts in progress. Thanks so much for participating in and promoting the contest!
