pants quilt

Here is my completed first quilt, made from old pant material. I was inspired to use pants after wearing out my favorite childhood quilt from sitting on it (on my bed) during college study time. I mean you sit on pants all of the time and they last and last.

I laid my blocks out on the floor to play around with color placement.

The top is complete and sewn to the backing. I chose to use fleece as my backing so that I could ease into the quilting experience. I'll be doing small quilts with batting to get the practice later on.

These are the scraps leftover from squaring the edges of my quilt. I'll save these in two separate categories: big enough to be possibly useful as fabric and so thin they're basically yarn.

I used some fabric I had sitting in my closet for the binding. If you're new to the quilting scene yourself, amandajean has a stellar tutorial on binding. Still I had quite a few problems, including....

I cut too much fabric because I thought I didn't have enough of the color I wanted to use (I had planned to make scrappy binding). Lesson learned: calculate twice, cut once

The joins on all of my binding strips were incorrect. I had the angles wrong. Lesson learned: read the directions carefully...

To avoid as much additional waste as possible, I used the original seam line of one strip and scooted the second strip down until there was enough cloth to make the fold. Lesson learned: don't trim your edges until you're sure the seam is right.

All in all this project was a success. Stay tuned to find out how I use the fabric scraps!

So cool to watch you dive in like this! Your lessons learned are helpful to newbies and oldsters alike, too.
